Because the engine was
pulled from a wrecked car it is necessary to do a thorough inspection for
damage. This is also the best time to paint and detail the engine as it is
extremely difficult to do so after it has been installed. The water pump has obviously been damaged in the front end collision. The shaft is bent and it will not turn. ![]() The damage is more apparent once the water pump was removed: ![]() The impact of the accident forced the water pump shaft back far enough to bend the backing plate. The water pump, pulley, and backing plate will be replaced. The water pump shaft also caused the timing cover to crack so it must also be replaced. ![]() This damage is very common in Mustang front end collisions. But fortunately it is neither difficult or expensive to repair, particularly since the engine is already out of the car and mounted on an engine stand. To remove the water pump, it was first necessary to remove an engine accessory mounting bracket. This revealed some additional areas needing attention: ![]() Corrosion is evident on the freeze plug, mounting bracket bolt, and oil filter from where the battery ruptured in the accident. These will also be replaced and the area thoroughly cleaned. |
