2010 Amish Rally Trip

Revised 8-29-2010

For several years now members of the Honda CX500 and GL500 Forum have been gathering together in Pennsylvania for several days of motorcycle riding and fellowship. This annual event has become the de facto main rally for forum members and is discussed all year. It has taken on the name Amish Rally due to it's proximity to several communities of Amish settlements in the nearby vicinity and in the heart of Pennsylvania.; the rally itself is not in any way connected to the Amish.

I attended this rally in 2008 and 2009 and had a great time. This year things came together at work such that I could again take a two week vacation around the rally weekend. In keeping with a relaxed vacation attitude I decided to ride up to the rally at a leisurely pace along a scenic route. The return route was left unplanned.

In the final weeks leading up to the rally several of us in the southeast discussed our travel plans via email. Jerry B. and I decided to meet up and ride together for most of the trip. Jerry hails from Columbia, SC and is known as JB in SC on the forum. He is both a good friend and an excellent rider; I was pleased that he would be riding with me.

I left home shortly after noon on Friday, August 13, and rode up to the T.W.O. Motorcycle Resort in Suches, GA. This is one of my favorite get-away places and I camped there Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday was spent riding on some of the north Georgia mountain roads and relaxing at the lodge with other motorcyclists.

These two photos were taken where the Appalachian Trail crosses Highway 60 a couple of miles south of T.W.O.

This was my campsite at T.W.O. The lodge can be seen through the trees.
